What Photographers Do

Photographers produce images that present a picture, tell a story, or record an event. A skilled pet photographer uses technical expertise, creativity, and equipment to enhance the animal’s appearance with natural or artificial light, photograph the animal from interesting angles, or draw attention to a particular aspect of the animal.

A collection of transparencies, with a loop for magnifying them, awaits the photographer’s consideration. Photographers use a light box and loop to view images in this form.

There’s a lot more to the business of photography than just taking the pictures. A photographer who wants to be successful must arrange for advertising, schedule appointments, set and adjust equipment, purchase supplies, keep records, bill customers, pay bills, and hire, train, and manage any employees. In their spare time, photographers may be processing images, designing albums, or mounting and framing finished photographs.

For animal photographer Jean Fogle, every day is different. It’s one of the things she loves about her work. “Typically, I am editing images, setting up shoots, and working on articles,” she says. “If I get bored or frustrated with one chore, I can switch and work on a completely different form of work. I often have three or four projects going on at once.”
